WFP supports local rice production in Bahir Dar

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) this week handed out eight rice polishing machines to the Regional Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development in Bahir Dar as part of its continued support to small-scale farmers in .
“Through the donation of the rice polishing machines, we want to encourage farmers to be actively involved the development of the rice production in ,” said WFP Ethiopia Country Director Mohamed Diab. “In addition, the machines will increase the farmers’ income which will encourage them to produce more.”
This initial donation of eight rice polishing machines valued at US$16,800 is part of WFP’s Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative through which WFP gives small-holder farmers the necessary know-how and tools to become competitive players in the agricultural market place and enables them to supply food to WFP operations in the country.
The hand-over ceremony took place at the warehouse of the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development in Bahir Dar.
